The Czech Republic and the Nuclear Suppliers Group

The Czech Republic is a Party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and a member of international control regimes supporting the Treaty, such as the Nuclear Suppliers′ Group (NSG) and the Zangger Committee.

The NSG is a multinational body contributing to the nuclear non-proliferation through the control of export and transfer of items designed for nuclear use and related dual-use items with the objective of averting proliferation of nuclear weapons and preventing acts of nuclear terrorism. These two controlled areas are covered by a pair of guidelines:

  • The first set of NSG Guidelines governs the export of items that are specially designed or prepared for use in nuclear industry, nuclear power plants etc. (“Part 1 items”).
  • The second set of NSG Guidelines governs the export of nuclear related dual-use items and technologies, which can make a contribution to an unsafeguarded nuclear activity, but which have also “non-nuclear” use (“Part 2 items”).

With respect to the continuous development in nuclear sphere, a fundamental review of these Guidelines is currently being conducted. The revised Guidelines will be considered during the next NSG Plenary Meeting which will take place in Prague from 10th to 14th June 2013. This Plenary will be chaired by H.E. Ambassador Veronika Kuchyňová Šmigolová, head of the Permanent Mission of the Czech Republic to the United Nations, OSCE and other International Organizations in Vienna. In this context it should be mentioned that this Plenary Meeting will be the first one for Mexico which became the newest full-fledged member in November 2012.
