Bilateral Meeting of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies of the Czech Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany

22nd regular bilateral meeting of representatives of the Czech and German nuclear regulatory bodies was held on 8 and 9 October 2018 in Bonn. The meeting was traditionally organized in the framework of the Intergovernmental Agreement on Issues of Common Interest in the Field of Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection.

The Czech delegation, led by the Deputy Chair of the State Office for Nuclear Safety (SÚJB), Mr. Petr Krs, was composed of SÚJB experts as well as representatives of ministries, operator of NPPs (ČEZ) and Radioactive Waste Repository Authority (SÚRAO). The German delegation, led by Mr. Thomas Elsner, the Deputy Director-General RS, Head of Directorate Safety of Nuclear Installations of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), consisted of representatives of BMU as well the Bavarian ministry of the Environment and Consumer Protection (StMUV), the Saxonian State Ministry for Environment and Agriculture (SMUL) and other institutions (GRS, Preussen Electra GmbH).

Both delegations presented topical issues in the legislation and administrative fields, including e.g. new legislation in radiation protection in Germany. Furthermore both sides provided information concerning selected events at NPPs from the prospective of operators as well as regulators; recent developments in the area of emergency preparedness and response; radioactive waste and spent fuel management.

The meeting was held in an opened atmosphere, accompanied by lively discussion. It was concluded with an excursion to the decommissioned Mülheim-Kärlich NPP near Koblenz.
