Bilateral Meeting of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies of the Czech Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany

21st regular bilateral meeting of representatives of the Czech and Germany nuclear regulatory bodies was held in a period of 9 – 10 October 2017 in Litoměřice. The meeting was traditionally organized in the framework of the Intergovernmental Agreement on Issue of Common Interest in the Field of Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection.

The Czech delegation led by the Deputy Chairman of the State Office for Nuclear Safety (SÚJB) Mr. Petr Krs was composed of SÚJB experts as well as representatives of ministries, operator of NPPs (ČEZ) and SÚRAO. The German delegation, led by Mr. Thomas Elsner, the Deputy Director-General RS, Head of Directorate RS I of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), consisted representatives of this ministry as well the Bavarian ministry (StMUV), the Saxon ministry (SMUL) and other institutions (GRS, Preussen Electra GmbH).

Both delegations presented the situation in the legislation and associated administrative as well the recent development in the field of radiation protection and emergency preparedness and response. Furthermore both sides provided information concerning: (1) of the operation of NPPs and on the gradual decommissioning of NPPs in Germany; (2) of radioactive waste and spent fuel management and of the operational experience and ageing management of CASTOR casks.

The meeting was held in an opened atmosphere, accompanied by lively discussion and was closed by the excursion into Radioactive Waste Repository ÚRAO Richard, which is located beneath one of the hills above the town of Litomeřice in northern Bohemia.
