Safety Performance Indicators

State regulation of nuclear safety and radiation protection is focused on assessment and evaluation of activities related to nuclear energy utilization and its results. In accordance with international practice SÚJB use safety performance indicators (SPI) as the basis for year by year evaluation of safety level of nuclear power plant.

Basic set of SPI was established in early 90´s and 1991 was the first year that was evaluated using SPI in Dukovany NPP. SPI specified in IAEA guides were modified according to Czech (originally Czechoslovak) conditions. Five SPI are identical with those used by WANO. Using experience and knowledge obtained from annual evaluation the set was revised in 1997-98 year. The SPI set was extended and in 2003 was used also for NPP Temelín operation evaluation.

SÚJB collects specified data in the course of the year thru its own inspection findings and licensee information, which are subject of SÚJB requirements, together. Four areas of power plant operation are evaluated:

  1. Significant Events
  2. Safety Systems Operation
  3. Barrier Integrity
  4. Radiation Safety

SÚJB Publishes Summary document annually as a appendix of Annual Report in Czech. The document is also attached to "National Report under the Convention on Nuclear Safety".
