The Czech Republic chairs the OPCW Executive council

Since 12 May 2018 the Czech Republic becomes member of the OPCW Executive Council for period 2018 – 2020. For the same period Ambassador Jana Reinišová, permanent representative of the Czech Republic in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, was elected as the Chairperson of the Executive Council.

OPCW Executive Council is the second highest organ of the Organization and consists of 41 members who are elected by the Conference States Parties by nominations of respective regional groups. The Council's mandate is to promote the effective implementation of, and compliance with, the Convention. It is also required to supervise the activities of the Secretariat, to cooperate with the National Authority of each State Party, and to facilitate consultations with and cooperation among States Parties, at their request.

The Czech Republic will be chairing the OPCW Executive council in a crucial period - allegation of use of chemical weapons in Syria will be assessed and change to the position of the OPCW Director General will take place. Current Director General Ambassador Ahmet Üzümçü completes his second term of office in July 2018 while newly appointed Director General Spanish Ambassador Fernando Arias begin his term of office on 25 July 2018.
